Event Introduction

The American Dream: The American Dream is a belief in which people can achieve a better life through courage and perseverance, regardless of their social class or the assistance of others.

Belief in the American Dream has also become a part of Taiwanese society, but in the form of the Taipei Dream. As the capital of Taiwan, Taipei has become an imaginative domain, where residents seek to enjoy the spoils of society, the environment, and technology. These spoils generate an illusion of passion, upon an unscalable vantage point, in which all is well, and all defies reality. A daily grind serves to switch, swap and reinvent our relationship roles, all the while, we mutter a monologue of social oaths. To quote Italo Calvino, author of Invisible Cities: “How many of them are living within their cities of fantasy? While moving to a city to fulfill their imaginations. Such an admirable and despicable display of stubbornness!”

Members of the art group “When Pigs Fly!” and the Taiwanese band “Baihehua” fulfill a different role within this performance. Participating as the performers, the sound producers, image (video) content creators, lighting and safety personnel, and performance coordinators seek to achieve the ultimate goal of letting a person fly. By seeking to achieve this goal through a collaborative group effort, they not only demonstrate the heterogeneous nature of this act of defying gravity, but also illustrate how we seek to explore and transcend existing societal constructs of the outside world. In essence, this is an ambition bounded by desires, while desires are imperative in containing action.

LIN, I-Shuo has experience in several fields of art, including photography, performance art, installation art, and music. He currently fronts the Taiwanese band BAI HE HUA, while also acting as the band’s primary music and lyrics creator. After taking an interest in traditional arts in 2012, he has since studied various forms of traditional arts, which include the Taiwanese pak-guan (北管); Indonesian Kecak dance; and the Thai instrument saw u.I-Shuo’s performances tend to take on a ritualistic nature, while his main focus is discussing the relationships between his performances and these rituals.
